NEW RELEASES | 2020 Cabernets & 2021 Chardonnay
After a long wait, we’re delighted to be back to announce the much-anticipated release of our latest vintages!
Fortunately, for the team here, work and life at Lake’s Folly has continued largely as normal over the past year - the only exception being that the cellar door was closed for almost nine months, after we sold out of last year’s releases in record time. Our cellar door manager, Roger (who many have met here over the years), can’t wait for the return to ‘normality’ having spent much of his time working with our vineyard team over the last nine months.
Our latest vintages are now available:
Lake's Folly 2021 Chardonnay - Hunter Valley 95/100
White peach and light vanillin oak, with hints of oatmeal and tropical fruits on the nose. The palate is quite generous and textural from the barrel fermentation, and shows flavours of ripe white peach and subtle lemon curd. Soft acidity and great persistence of flavour; it will continue to improve over the coming decade and beyond.
Lake's Folly 2020 Cabernets - Hunter Valley 95/100
Another strong vintage following on from 2017, 2018 and 2019. Dark, ripe fruits dominate the nose and palate – blackberry and mulberry, along with hallmark Lake’s Folly cedar tones (derived from the fruit, not the oak). Soft, supple, generous style from another drought year. Lovely balanced oak rounds out, and complements, the wine.
A note on wine scores: those of you familiar with my scores over the last 21 years, know that I have resisted the trend of ‘score creep’ in recent times (which has seen an increasing number of wines being awarded very high scores, above 96 points, somewhat diluting the significance of an excellent score, when a wine is truly outstanding. So, rather than rescore 50+ vintages of our wines, my scores on those will remain as they have - conservative (add a point or two if you need to ‘recalibrate’ 😊).
One of the best aspects of Lake’s Folly, is the uncompromising approach to true estate-grown and made wines. As the vineyard approaches its 60th year, we feel most proud of the fact that Lake’s Folly remains family-owned - the Fogarty family at the helm now for 22 years – and remains, as it was in 1963, as a single-site vineyard that produces unique, distinguished wines, with a thread of consistency, year in, year out. Our wines really do demonstrate that ‘terroir’ isn’t unique to the French! When you visit our cellar door, you’ll drive past the vines that make the wines you’ve come here to sample. And, a working winery is situated just behind the doors – not merely a shopfront. Grown here and made here since 1963.
